DME is equipment that helps you complete your daily activities in your home. It includes a variety of items such as wheelchairs, oxygen, hospital beds, power wheelchair/scooters.

Most insurances do cover DME when certain criteria is met and with a physician’s prescription.

It depends on your insurance carrier however, if you have Original Medicare you pay 20% coinsurance for your DME and Medicare covers 80%. You would also be responsible for any deductibles not met. If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, your costs could differ depending on your plan. Your DME provider will inform you of your approximate costs once your insurance has been verified.

By law, you the patient have the right to choose your DME provider. Physicians, case managers, social workers and other healthcare professionals can assist you in making that decision if you are not familiar with available providers.
